Abortion vs Ear Piercing
I was at a mall last night with the family, and we'd passed by a small beauty shop with an ear piercing station. The station had a prominent sign facing the passers by, reading something like "Due to potential medical risks invoved in having ears pierce, it is a requirement of the California Health Code that any minors receive parental consent prior to undergoing this procedure."
I thought "Huh...odd...I guess it makes sense, given that pierced ears could get infected."
Then it hit me - wait just a second, getting an abortion doesn't require parental consent, and there's even Supreme Court caselaw that makes a consent requirement unconstitutional.
So let me get this straight, America. My daughter needs my consent to have her earlobe lanced, and a metal post put in the hole, but if she wants to have a doctor put a vacuum tube inside of her, and vacuum around until her unborn fetus is sucked out, that's a decision she's competent to make on her own. Have we as a people gone totally insane?
From where I sit, one of two things needs to be done. 1) the health code needs to be changed...making ear piercing more of a life changing operation than abortion is ludicrous. or 2) abortion should at least require parental consent of a minor, because at a minimum, abortion is not the moral equivalent of getting ones ears pierced, it is far more serious both medically and morally.
Call abortion for what it is - the intentional killing of an unborn human fetus. It's legal, and will always remain so, even if Roe is overturned. Something like this should never be undertaken lightly. Creating a society where this intentional killing is somehow less than piercing of an ear is a sorry testimony on our times.
I'm hardly anti-abortion, I just think it needs to be taken more seriously. I'm of the opinion that if a minor gets to the point where she needs one, there are far greater issues at stake that should be addressed.
